It’s all become a part of film history. The year when a fandom bullied an entire studio into changing the design of their lead character. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s worth talking about. According to reports, the work took months and around $5 million, but are we really to believe that the studio thought that original design was worth running with?

Sonic Team Argentina had an interview with animator Max Schneider, which was translated by Tails’ Channel, and in it, Schneider said the studio was genuinely confident in that initial design, referring to movies like TMNT and Transformers, which required an adjustment from audiences, but ultimately worked.

Obviously, the same couldn’t be said about Sonic the Hedgehog.

“To modify everything took many months, since a big part of the movie was already finished,” Schneider said. “And the process was basically to redesign the model, make a new rig and going back to animate everything with the character. Some things were rescued from the old animations, but others had to practically be animated again.”

This does seem to go against previous reports that stated the only finished Sonic CG work was stuff done in the trailers, but the end situation seems to be the same — that it didn’t cost that much money for Paramount Pictures to fix.
