Sonic The Hedgehog First Look Is…Mildly Disturbing?

The era of the mascot video game movie is nearly upon us. Next year will see the release of Sonic the Hedgehog, who will be making the transition to the big screen in live-action form for the first time. Sure, he may have had several outings on the small screen and a couple appearances in the Wreck-It Ralph franchise, but this will be the first time he’ll be leading his own live-action flick.

Of course, I say “live-action” with air quotes, because Sonic himself will not be portrayed in live-action form. Instead, not unlike Alvin and the Chipmunks and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, he will exist in a live-action world, surrounded by human people. But just how will this be adapted for the big screen? More specifically, how will Sonic look?

Well, IGN has released our first look at the Blue Blur, and he looks…odd, to say the least.

Some may think the fur looks odd, but executive producer Tim Miller (of Deadpool fame) said they had always envisioned fur on the creature:

“That was always Stage 1 of adapting it to what the real world is and what a real animal would be like. It would be weird and it would feel like he was running around nude if he was some sort of otter-like thing. It was always, for us, fur, and we never considered anything different. It’s part of what integrates him into the real world and makes him a real creature.”

To me, it’s his body proportions that seem weird. He looks less like an animal and more like a human with a weird head thrown on. But apparently, that may not be the most controversial decision. Tim Miller went on to state that the one that may cause the biggest splash are the eyes:

“I don’t think SEGA was entirely happy with the eye decision, but these sorts of things you go, ‘It’s going to look weird if we don’t do this.’ But everything is a discussion, and that’s kind of the goal, which is to only change what’s necessary and stay true to the rest of it. He’s not going to feel like a Pixar character would because I don’t think that’s the right aesthetic to make it feel like part of our world.”

Well, sadly, the look we have is pretty limited, so we won’t get to judge things like the eyes for ourselves until later, but what do you think of the silhouette we’ve received so far? Let us know in the comments below!
