Sonic the Hedgehog is headed to the big screen very soon. Honestly, if there is one character we’re all nervous about, it’s Sonic. The rollout for this character has been a bit problematic. The first silhouette image showed off an odd body shape, and the first poster showing off his feet only fanned the flames. Finally, a leaked presentation showed off his full final design, and fans weren’t really thrilled with it.
But, at the end of the day, so long as the trailer and overall content are good, it shouldn’t matter, right? Well, Paramount showed off two trailers for the film at CinemaCon, bringing in one of its stars Jim Carrey to help introduce it. But how was the trailer itself, you’re wondering? Well, it’s hard to say based on description alone, but here is a description from the folks over at Deadline.
“First trailer shown was Sonic-centric, showing the blue animal zooming across a desert like an MX missile and meeting James Marsden’s cop who shoots him with a tranquilizer gun. Sonic is hear to save the world as it’s being attacked by Transformers-like-robots.
“The second trailer, which Carrey introduced shows a comeback for his hysterics on screen as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, a big black mustache super genius who argues with the army and Marsden’s cop.
“‘I was spitting out formulas when you were spitting up formulas,’ Carrey’s Robotnik tells James Marsh’s cop. ‘I was breastfed,’ answers Marsden in the trailer.”

Yes, you read that right. That was an awkward breastfeeding joke in a Sonic the Hedgehog movie. But how did the blue blur himself look? According to /Film, not too great. They compare the visual look of him to Detective Pikachu, but without really any extra visual charm to set it apart from its video game movie brethren. What’s worse is that Carrey’s Robotnik is described as odd-looking, with his scenes being described as over-the-top and “painfully unfunny.”
Again, that’s just from a couple of trailers…but it doesn’t look like it’ll be receiving the same enthusiastic praise as Detective Pikachu. I want this to work…but I can’t help but be a bit pessimistic.
