Sony Compares Once Upon A Time In Hollywood To…Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid?

If you’ve been following Once Upon a Time in Hollywood since Quentin Tarantino finished the script, you know that he was having a grand ol’ time hopping around Tinseltown with it following the scandal surrounding his former partners The Weinstein Company. Rather than it be a typical case where a filmmaker would have to pitch themselves to a studio, the studios were the ones pitching themselves to Tarantino.

Tarantino was able to set his terms and conditions and pretty much throw his weight around like nobody’s business, and he eventually ended up at Sony Pictures. But why exactly did he pick Sony? From what we know, studios were dolling themselves up for Tarantino, going so far as to decorate their studios to fit the era being portrayed in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. From what it sounds like, the reason he went with Sony has nothing to do with window-dressing, as Sony Picture Entertainment Group Motion Pictures chairman Tom Rothman said to Deadline.

“We are very, very committed to the theatrical experience,” he said. “[Tarantino] just told me at dinner tonight that that was the thing — to use his phrase — that, quote, ‘rung his bell most,’ was that Sony is very, very committed to the theatrical proposition, by which I mean movies in theaters.”

While we don’t yet know how this relationship will pan out in terms of box office and awards contention, Rothman does seem to be very confident about the product. However, Rothman is betting hard on its two stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, which he compares to a film like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which also featured two big stars in their prime.

“In the modern movie business you don’t get two-big-star pictures — I was going to say ‘often,’ but it is actually almost never. The audience gets a chance to have two for one.”

While I’m not entirely sure I agree given movies like, oh I don’t know, Avengers: Endgame, I understand the sentiment. Plus, with this being an original movie, the comparison isn’t really fair.

What do you think of this comparison? Do you think the movie will live and die thanks to its stars? Let us know down below!
