Sony Confirms ‘CHARLIE’S ANGELS’ Reboot, ‘ROBOTECH’ Flick, and More!

Charlie's Angels

CinemaCon certainly seems to be sending the internet abuzz with tons of announcements and confirmations. For months we’ve heard tons of rumors from Sony properties that have all the makings for a confirmation — without the actual confirmations…until now.

In addition to big name titles like MIB 23, there were a few other films that got official confirmation that mostly flew under the radar.

First up on that list is a CHARLIE’S ANGELS reboot. The last we heard of this film was a good seven months ago in September of last year. At the time, director/producer/actress Elizabeth Banks was in talks to direct this reboot. According to EW, that film is now officially confirmed, with Elizabeth Banks in the director’s chair. A move like this was to be expected from Sony. After all, despite being relatively new to the directing game, Banks managed to make PITCH PERFECT 2, now one of the highest grossing female-directed films of all time.

Also up on the confirmation slate was the live-action ROBOTECH film. We last heard from this film back in April of last year, when Wan was juggling the prospects of taking either that film on, or AQUAMAN and FURIOUS 8FURIOUS 8 ended up going to STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON director F. Gary Gray, while Wan hopped on board the DCEU train with AQUAMAN. The latter film is slated for a July 2018 release date, so while Wan looks to be busy with that behemoth for the foreseeable future, it looks like Sony is willing to put ROBOTECH on the back burner until that film is done.

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE, the adaptation of the Swedish book of the same name, and sequel to David Fincher’s 2011 film THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is also apparently in the works, though there are little to no details on who will be involved.
