Sony Could Shop Their He-Man Live-Action Film To Netflix

Remember that Masters of the Universe movie? Yeah, that sucker has been in the works for more years than I can even count. Like many other projects in the biz, it’s had a revolving door of directors and creative talent, and all the while, people like me have been wondering whether or not anyone out there actually wants to see this movie on the big screen. As it turns out, I’m not the only one thinking that.

According to THR’s sources, Sony chairman Rothman is mulling over making the film for Netflix. The idea there is that it would allow them to make the movie they want without having the same risk as they would putting it into theaters.

Talks are reportedly at the preliminary stages, but it’s an interesting thought that could benefit both parties. Sony can finally churn out that Masters of the Universe movie they’ve been aching to toss into the world for years and Netflix gets a branded piece of I.P., which they are desperately in need of.

But, of course, it all comes with its risks. If they make the safe deal with Netflix, they forfeit certain rights and territories they would otherwise have access to if they co-financed it. And if the film is a big hit, they won’t see nearly as much of that. But, Sony is reportedly looking to bolster its bottom line, and decreasing marketing costs and mitigating risk with Netflix may be the way to god that.

This kind of strategy is a trend in today’s world — one that I don’t expect will go away any time soon. One tick in favor of this move is that Netflix is currently producing a He-Man series, so it may be good synergy to have both live-action and animated properties under the same roof.
