Sony Goes Full Nintendo With PlayStation Classic, But Will It Work For Fans?

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

If Nintendo has proven anything over the course of its storied history, it’s that fans LOOOOOVE nostalgia. And when you’re a company like Nintendo, who is responsible for countless original classics and iconic characters, you’re able to keep milking that teet forever. It’s a teet that’ll likely never run dry, no matter how many times you force fans to keep paying for the experience.

But Nintendo isn’t the only one who can cash in on nostalgia. At least that’s what Sony hopes. The console developer recently released a brand-new console called the PlayStation Classic? Sound familiar? Yeah, it’s basically trying to scratch the same itch, but can it succeed in doing so?

Personally, I don’t think it’ll work. Yes, there is no doubt that PlayStation was an influential gaming system, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was an early player in the 3D gaming revolution. As such, the games were still trying to figure out how to work in a three-dimensional space. The result are games that, while fun for the time, don’t really hold up nowadays — especially racing and fighting games, and from the five games they have advertised, they have Ridge Racer Type 4 and Tekken 3, games that will likely feel horribly outdated.

This is in contrast to NES and SNES games, where the art of pixel gaming was simpler and often more polished.

Now, don’t get me wrong. With 20 games pre-loaded into the system, and there are bound to be plenty of good ones (I see Final Fantasy VII and Wild Arms there). But will the gameplay actually hold up like their pixel counterparts that populated the last generation? I’m doubtful…but I still hope that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night makes it on the list!
