Sony Reveals The Controversial-Looking PlayStation 5 Controller!

A few weeks back, Sony released an entire presentation about the upcoming PlayStation 5. However, like many gamers out there, I was actually fairly underwhelmed by what they were saying. I’m not a developer, so most of what they were saying was just overly-technical and pretty darn boring. It went way over my head and did nothing to convey to me, the consumer, what experience I’d be in for when if I bought a PlayStation 5.

So, I’ve been waiting for that moment where they’d actually release something I’d be able to fully understand. Something I could connect with. I was eager to find something to latch onto, be it photos of the system itself, gameplay trailers, or even a tech demo of sorts. Well, today, we have our first real taste of that. Today, Sony revealed the controller for the PlayStation 5, which they call the DualSense. I have to say, it’s quite the departure. For Sony, that is.

As you can see, the controller is actually a bit different. For starters, Sony changed the form factor of the controller. It actually very much resembles the shape of the current Xbox One and Switch controllers, which is a good thing. While I enjoyed the DualShock shape when I was younger, as I got older, I actually found myself gravitating toward the look pioneered by Microsoft.

If you’re worried about the DualSense losing any DualShock 4 functionality, fret not. Everything you love is there, with the only major difference being that the Share button has been changed to Create — but it does actually do the same job, only with more to it. In fact, that pretty much describes the DualSense well. It does a lot of the same job as the DualShock 4, only more.

They’ve adopted haptic feedback into the controller, hoping to add more immersion into the game. They’ve also incorporated adaptive triggers to the L2 and R2 buttons so that gamers could feel some real tension. This could come in handy with activities like shooting a bow and arrow.

And if online gaming is your thing, the controller also features a built-in microphone array. It makes jumping into quick chats easy, but if you’re in it for the long haul, they still recommend a headset.

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5,” Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in a statement. “The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”
