Sea Of Stars Interview: How This Chrono Trigger-Inspired RPG Came To Be (Exclusive)

Chrono Trigger. You only need to say the name for the bellies of gamers to warm with nostalgia. It’s a keystone experience for many of us, and plenty of games have gone on to cite it as an inspiration. SquareEnix itself has even taken a stab at creating games like I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear, which took elements of Chrono Trigger and attempted to update them for modern gamers. Oftentimes, the result is decidedly mixed. But if there is one game that could succeed, it could be Sea of Stars.

The game hails from the Quebec-based Sabotage Studio, which created the acclaimed The Messenger. That game was a retro ninja platformer reminiscent of Ninja Gaiden, so you wouldn’t expect their next big game to be a turn-based RPG. But with Sea of Stars, that’s exactly what we’re getting.

I had a chance to speak with Thierry Boulanger, the creative director and president of Sabotage Studio, where we discussed the origin of the game, its gameplay mechanics, its story, and its inspirations. You can check out our full video conversation below!

Don’t forget to back the project on Kickstarter while you’re at it! It may have reached its goal already, but there are sure to be some fun stretch goals along the way.
