Indian families certainly know their gatherings, parties, and gossip. Actress Sophia Ali stars in this delightful film about a family in India Sweets and Spices from filmmaker Geeta Malik.

The film delves into the myriad of Indian-American divergent cultures from traditions, dating, gossip, and with the excuse of any social gathering.

The film stars Sophia Ali, Manisha Koirala, Adil Hussain, Rish Shah, Deepti Gupta, Ved Sapru, and Anita Kalathara.

Here is the official synopsis:

Alia Kapur (Sophia Ali) returns to her family’s posh suburban New Jersey home after a year away at college and upends their well-ordered life with her brash independence. After befriending Varun (Rish Shah), the handsome son of the new owners of the local Indian grocery, she invites his family to a dinner party where family secrets are revealed.

Alia’s surprise turns to rebellion when she uncovers secrets about both her parents that push her toward a daring and ultimately hilarious confrontation. India Sweets and Spices celebrates a young woman’s coming of age set against a lovingly framed glimpse of the life of an Indian American family.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta talked with actress Sophia Ali and director/writer Geeta Malik. We talked about the Indian culture with both traditional and American values mixed today in the United States.

Sophia Ali is best known for her portrayal as Dr. Dahlia Qadri, a Muslim intern on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. She had a recurring character on Freeform’s Famous in Love and appeared in the horror film Truth or Dare and the comedy Everybody Wants Some!! Also, she completed shooting the second season of the new series The Wilds and stars in the upcoming video game adaptation Uncharted with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.

Geeta Malik’s first feature film Troublemaker debut at Cinequest Film Festival back in 2011. Her most recent short film, Shameless, screened at more than fifteen film festivals. Malik won the Academy Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting for Dinner with Friends, which ultimately became India Sweets and Spices.

India Sweets and Spices is in theaters tomorrow, November 19.
