Guillermo del Toro may not be using the creature features he’s known for in Nightmare Alley, but the film has all the marks of tensions and the air of mystery.
The film has an all-star cast with Bradley Cooper headlining as Stanton Carlisle, a master manipulator, and con-man. The rest of the cast includes Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, and David Strathairn.
Here is the synopsis:
When charismatic but down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pate (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival, he crafts a golden ticket to success, using this newly acquired knowledge to grift the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society. With the virtuous Molly (Rooney Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who might be his most formidable opponent yet.

Despite the film’s title and trailer, it doesn’t seem like it’s a horror film in the tune of Guillermo del Toro’s previous work. However, his familiar aesthetics and styles are present in this film and it surely gets that vibe of unexpected twists and turns.
Nonetheless, there are plenty of previous del Toro collaborators in the cast and many new faces. Let’s mark this one done as a film to watch by the end of the year….not just for Guillermo del Toro, but at least for Bradley Cooper.
Nightmare Alley is in theaters nationwide on December 17.
