Spectacular Spider-Man Can’t Come Back Reiterates Creator

Sorry, but Spectacular Spider-Man can’t come back. So says creator Greg Weisman, and you’d think he’d know? Everyone who has seen it seems to love Spectacular Spider-Man. So much so, fans have eagerly wanted the show to continue, but legally, it just can’t. As Weisman has detailed on more than one occasion the popular show is mired in a legal issue. You see, at the time, Sony had the TV rights to Spidey. This was all around the time that Disney purchased Marvel, and that changed things. Sony owned the designs and title etc, but now Disney owned the character outside of the movies and wanted to use him.

So Spectacular Spider-Man had to end because Sony owned it, and Disney owned Spider-Man. That being said, Sony currently owns the rights to Spider-Man on film and yet Marvel are filming Spider-Man 3 for the MCU as we speak. The point is that deals can be done, but who other than the fans would benefit? Would Disney really want to pay Sony money just to bring back this show? Popular as Spectacular Spider-Man is, it’s not going to sell Disney+ subscriptions.

Spectacular Spider-Man

Well, once again Weisman was asked about the return of Spectacular Spider-Man. One again Weisman shot those suggestions down. Though he responded to a few different questions, Weisman covered all ground we already know. The most importnat Tweet Weisman made was as follows.

It just seems like it’s now highly unlikely that Spectacular Spider-Man will ever see the light of day again. Either Sony would have to rent it to Disney+, or Disney would have to buy the designs from Sony. Considering in the years since Marvel has produced it’s own Spider-Man series this seems unlikely. Though, one thing for sure is that fans love Spectacular Spider-Man a lot more than any of the current animated versions.

Spectacular Spider-Man can’t come back! A sad truth, but a truth nonetheless. Leave any thoughts you have in the usual spot below.
