Spider-Man: Far From Home – Was J. Jonah Jameson Just Confirmed To be In The MCU?

Some interpretations of characters live on much longer than others. It’s a bit ironic that in the years since Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, there is one character who has yet to be reinterpreted. We’ve seen a new Spider-Man, a new Green Goblin, a new Norman Osborn, a new MJ (kinda), and countless other characters in the Spider-Man mythos. But there’s only been one live-action take on J. Jonah Jameson.

Of course, I’m talking about J.K. Simmons, who acted alongside Tobey Maguire’s take on the webslinger for three films. He owned that role, giving us an intimidating and hilarious take on The Daily Bugle editor-in-chief. In the Amazing Spider-Man films, we had only the smallest glimpses of the character in text form, and the MCU has managed to avoid him altogether. For now. Speaking at a Q&A, Spider-Man: Far From Home executive producer Eric Hauserman Carroll pretty much confirmed there would be some sort of interpretation of the character down the line:

“Yes, we’ve absolutely talked and thought about those characters a lot, specifically in reference to this film. What we just want to make sure we’re [presenting] them in a way that doesn’t make you feel instantly like you’ve seen them before. So we have a couple of ideas, some of which I can’t really go into detail because they’re spoilery, but it’s absolutely – if we had an “in” for the Daily Bugle that wasn’t just your traditional newspaper…and Peter Parker, there’s this cool, weird thing happening where being a photographer isn’t necessarily a mark of distinction anymore. We all have better cameras in our pockets than most people even owned ten years ago. So how do we get Peter or somebody into that world without it feeling like, do kids really aspire to go be photographers for The New York Times anymore? Or do they aspire to have their tweet reposted, and so on.”

“So we’re trying to pay as much homage to the source material as possible, and we do think there are a couple of fun ideas like that in here, most of which I don’t want to spell out for you, but absolutely. We want to take as much of the mythology that people love and present it in a way that’s totally faithful to what people love about it, but in a [different] way.”

Then, when asked if it would be fair to say that neither Jameson nor The Daily Bugle would be in the film, Carroll said “No,” solidifying that — even if not an old-timey newspaper — that they’d both be showing up in some form. But what form would show up in? Via email? FaceTime? And what form would The Daily Bugle show up in? Will it be a blog? A big news website? A YouTube channel? A TikTok account?
