Spider-Man: The Iconic Kissing Scene From Sam Raimi’s Film Had Tobey Maguire ‘Semi-Drowning’

While the original Spider-Man films from Sam Raimi may not exactly hold up well to some (this writer included), there is no doubt they were an important part of comic book movie history. Along with the X-Men films, they managed to take the genre to a whole new, unexpected level, and that’s in no small part to the comic book imagery they were able to realize on the big screen.

In addition to the webslinging from building to building, perhaps the single most iconic image we have from that first Spider-Man film is when Peter Parker hangs upside down and kisses Mary Jane.

Recalling this scene, stunt coordinator Jeff Habberstad went into great detail about how important that scene was from a character perspective, as it opened up Peter to a real vulnerability, but Raimi himself recalled that star Tobey Maguire “kind of drowning” during the scene.

“While he was doing the scene, I remember the water was falling down into his upside down nostrils, so he was kind of drowning. But it was a kissing scene. So, he had to pretend like it was a pleasant, sweet moment for him, when in fact, he was semi-drowning.”

Yeah, it makes perfect sense. While this move certainly seems romantic to look at, more often than not, Hollywood itself is counterintuitive. Scenes that look cold were often filmed under hot conditions, and vice versa. Just goes to show that the industry really is about making illusions rather than reality.

But that doesn’t make them leave any less of an impression on us all.
