Splinter Cell: John Wick Writer Creating Animated Series!

Splinter Cell is getting an animated series!

There are plenty of video game franchises that are perfect for adaptation. In fact, there are some that are so perfect, they’ve kind of flown under the radar for me. One such gaming series is Splinter Cell. Between its cinematic nature and espionage mechanics, it’d be a great spy thriller on the big or small screen. In fact, with the way TV is handled these days, I could see a solid live-action TV series on Amazon Prime as the way to go.

But no, not today. In an effort to undermine my tiny brain, we have some news with regards to a Splinter Cell adaptation. Not only will it be a Netflix series, but it will be an anime series. That’s right. We’ll get to see the likes of Sam Fisher in all his anime glory in this original series from the streamer and Ubisoft. However, that’s only one cool aspect of this news.

According to Variety, Derek Kolstad will be writing and executive producing the show. You may not know his name, but you certainly have at least heard of his work. This is the brilliant mind behind the John Wick franchise. It was crazy enough that the first film worked as well as it did, but each entry proved to be just as solid in its own way, proving that his success was no fluke.

Splinter Cell first hit game shelves in 2002, and was one of the major stealth games to hit at the time. It followed former Navy SEAL Sam Fisher and a number of fun and engaging black ops missions. The series has also spilled over into the world of novels, so it’s no stranger to adaptation.

While the anime direction is indeed weird, I do think it’s a good fit. I’ve watched many an anime series, and there is a grounded nature the medium can give to a stealth franchise like this. Plus, this allows the talent from the likes of Michael Ironside as Sam Fisher. Then again, I guess this could be an opportunity to cast a younger actor.

Either way, animation brings with it a plethora of potential, and Netflix has proven that adult animation has a place in today’s world of entertainment.
