Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers Game Looks Set To Be A GAAS Online Co-Op experience

It was revealed ages ago that Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics were developing a game titled simply ‘Avengers Project’. When this game arrived and what kind of game it would be, was unknown. Then finally, we heard that the game would actually be titled Marvel’s Avengers and be revealed for the first time at E3 on June 11 at a special panel.

At this point, we still didn’t know what type of game it would be though I had my suspicions and hopes this would be an online GAAS game. GAAS stands for Games As A Service and you can look at games such as Destiny 1 and 2, The Division 1 and 2, Anthem (even though it’s disgustingly broken) and Sea of Thieves as a benchmark for how the GAAS system works. We are talking a persistent world that you play in with other online players either solo or in teams, to complete missions, tasks and most importantly loot the place dry and improve your character’s power level.

Well, it turns out I was right, though it was quickly pulled, you can find a description of the game still on the Reset Era forums Here. To summarise it says this will be the defining Avengers gaming experience. An epic action-adventure that combines cinematic storytelling with continuous single-player and co-operative gameplay as you assemble teams of up to four players, extraordinary abilities, hero customization, combining powers, and an “ever-expanding” world that is constantly under threat.

That’s a GAAS game 100% and I have to say that for a gamer like me who enjoys that type of experience, I am super excited to see what Square Enix can do with this universe. Normally though, in these game you create your own character and develop it in the way you like, I do wonder if instead, you will be choosing from a list of classic Avengers to play as, if so, I bags Hulk.

The only potential issues I can see here are whether they actually have the game working and finished at launch, which frankly isn’t the norm on a GAAS game from my experience. As I mentioned above Anthem from EA and Bioware is having a terrible time as the game simply wasn’t even close to being finished when it was released, and it could mean the death of the game unless they can fix it quickly. Destiny 1 and 2, and the first of The Division games suffered similar launch issues, though less extreme situations to Anthem.

Can Marvel’s Avengers satisfy my urge for more superhero gaming and my love for GAAS games? My friends and I are definitely sitting up and taking notice of this one. We will find out more on June 11 and hopefully, some gameplay footage and more details will emerge. We still have no word yet on a release date for this game, and I hope that’s because they are taking the approach of releasing it when it’s ready and not before.

Does Marvel’s Avengers sound like the sort of game that could get you hooked online? Will you be tuning in to E3 on June 11th to see what all the fuss is about?
