Star Trek: Discovery Gets A 3rd Season And Canon Controversy

A couple of years ago CBS announced it would create its own streaming service and it’s flagship (yes I did that) would be a new Star Trek series called Star Trek: Discovery. I thought this was crazy. Who would pay for stuff from a broadcast channel? I mean, you get that for free WITHOUT a cable or satellite provider! Well, apparently a lot of people will pay for it. Enough that Discovery not only is in its 2nd Season, but will be getting a 3rd!

Discovery itself has been quite the hit, but it has also come with some controversy. Beyond the claims of Mary Sue-ness and that the show is being too SJW-y, there are serious questions about continuity and retconning. You see, this show is supposed to be in the prime timeline but they have changed so much. The uniforms are unisex before they’re supposed to be, Spock uses martial arts and violence more than he should, there’s too much military grade stuff in Star Fleet, the aliens are different, and a lot more. I’ll be the first to admit I am not a big Trek guy, but I know enough to question why they set this show when they did if they wanted to do all of this stuff. I understand that there is some desire to update things to reflect modern television, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but they could have set this apart from the main time line or set it in the future instead of basically saying the past stuff exists, but it doesn’t… but it does… sorta…

Alex Kurtzman, who is the showrunner, had this to say about continuity when asked by, EW

“I will agree with you, though, that the best version of the story needs to be the driver. But what’s the best version of a story is an entirely subjective thing. That’s why we have so many different voices in the writers room with so many different points of view. You want to write a nuanced story to get as many different voices as possible to represent how they feel about different ideas. A big part of my process is listening to the other writers. With Trek, you want to go out and beta-test ideas. But as soon as you do that you’ll get 50 percent of people telling you they love it and 50 percent saying you should be strung up and killed. At a certain point you need to follow your own internal compass, but you don’t want to do it in a vacuum — that’s very dangerous — so we hire people to express what they think Star Trek means, and where we’re violating canon and what we can invent within the grey area.”

There’s no denying that politics and changing societal norms play a part in choices made in entertainment, and personally as long as it serves the story and comes naturally I have no issue with the majority of choices. However, my opinion is only one of over 7 billion in the world and people are entitled to their own opinions. They’re also entitled to be upset when a beloved franchise is affected by such choices. It’s shaky and dangerous ground for both the creators and the fans.
