Star Wars: Anthony Daniels Happy With A Bigger Role In The Rise Of Skywalker

It was only a week or so ago, that Joseph ‘Jammer’ Medina, Kyle Malone and I were talking about how minor C-3PO’s role has been in the Disney Star Wars films thus far, whilst recording The Last Call Podcast for The Empire Strikes Back. Kyle said that one of the things he disliked about this new trilogy was how little screen time Threepio got as a character and we discussed our own views on this.

Well, as far as we can tell from the trailer so far, it does appear that Threepio has a bigger role in The Rise of Skywalker and now Anthony Daniels who has played the character since 1977 has confirmed this when speaking with ET Canada at the recent D23 Expo. Check out the transcript below

“I’m front and center in this one, for a lot of it, and that made me feel very happy and very excited. Because the stuff we do is magic, the inventiveness, superb, and so, for me, and for Threepio, this is a very good bye-bye moment. Enjoy.”

I know that everyone’s views on Star Wars are different, when we three discussed it, Jammer was more of the opinion that he wanted to see new characters instead of Threepio and Artoo again, whereas Kyle and myself felt that Threepio and Artoo were the connective tissue within the Skywalker Saga and should have had bigger roles. Just what Threepio’s role will be in The Rise of Skywalker is unknown, though I do have a few theories I’ll save for another time.

This could well be Daniels last appearance as Threepio on film if this is indeed the end of the Skywalker Saga, one doesn’t imagine that his character would feature in the trilogy currently being devised by former Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff and Weiss, but of course, we don’t know that for sure. Daniels also spoke with Variety recently and the way he talked about filming his final scene of this movie, does make it feel like the end of the line for Daniels in his most iconic role.

“Partly because [director J.J. Abrams] said some really nice things and all the crew were listening and watching. I have to admit it was an emotional moment, but I knew it was coming, it wasn’t even a scene in which I said anything. For once, Threepio was in a scene without butting in. But I felt it’s such a terrific movie that I thought it was okay to say goodbye. I feel satisfied with this one. I have something to be proud of that, you know, as I say goodbye.”

I’m glad Daniels feels satisfied with his role in this one if nothing else. As said above, for me there’s a certain glue that sticks Star Wars together and I feel like Threepio and Artoo are an integral part of the formula for that glue. Whether it results in a great Star Wars movie, only time will tell.
