Star Wars: Episode IX has locked down another actor in the form of J.J. Abrams alum Dominic Monaghan. Of course, the actor also played a key role in Abrams’ TV show, LOST, but he is likely most well known for his work on The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, where he played the role of Merry.
“The galaxy far far away has had almost as much influence as the one I live in, so I am delighted to be involved,” Monaghan said in a statement.
Sadly, there are no details surrounding what his role in the film will be, and given the overall breadth of the franchise, it can be anything from a standard humanoid-type person to an animatronic alien.

Monaghan will be joining an all-star cast that includes Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, and Richard E. Grant, who will all be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.
While LOST and Lord of the Rings are the only projects I’ve seen Monaghan in (no one counts X-Men Origins: Wolverine), I’m all for this casting choice and am interested to see how he is incorporated into the story.
