Star Wars: Emperor’s Throne In The Rise of Skywalker Inspired By McQuarrie Design For Return Of The Jedi

You can see the image of a throne in the header above that was revealed in the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Since we know that Palpatine is in this movie, it makes sense that this is his throne, right?

Now we have some confirmation that the design for this took inspiration from some sketches done by Ralph McQuarrie for the Emperor’s throne room in Return of the Jedi. Phil Szostak, who has official links to Star Wars, has revealed a McQuarrie sketch on his Twitter feed. Feel free to check it for yourself, but here is the image he posted below.

You can see the similarity yes? It’s interesting that they have gone back to the McQuarrie well for this one, and it’s also kind of cool that they did so. Of course, using a McQuarrie image, doesn’t mean the fans are suddenly going to go gaga over the new movie. There are many factors in this movie which I believe will remain controversial, namely, how the hell did the Emperor return anyway? Did he survive, or has he come back using some Sith superpower? I know which one I prefer, as the idea of him surviving the destruction of the Death Star is ludicrous to me.

You can, however, see in this image above, that the original Death Star throne room seems very intact, and considering the vaporization of the Death Star that occurred in Jedi, I am worried they are going to suggest Palp’s survived. I hope I am dead wrong on that one, evil Sith spirits is far more appealing to me than something which destroys the ending of Jedi. We must also note that even now we have yet to see an image of Palpatine in this movie and it remains possible that he doesn’t appear in a physical form. There were many rumors that Matt Smith might be playing a younger version of Palpatine, or a body inhabited by his spirit, that’s pure speculation at this point as we don’t even know for sure that Smith is in the movie.
