The main cast for J.J. Abrams’ upcoming space fantasy Star Wars: Episode 9 is certainly rounding out very well. Just a few days back, it was confirmed that Abrams alum Dominic Monaghan would be joining the cast, and now, Variety is reporting that The Crown and Doctor Who star Matt Smith would also be in on the action.
According to the outlet, he won’t just be in the film, but he’ll be joining in a “key role.” As stated above, Smith is coming off an Emmy-nominated performance in The Crown, but I think many geeks know him best as the 11th Doctor. Given the real crossover between Doctor Who fans and Star Wars fans, there’s bound to be some excitement over his casting.

Returning cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast of Episode IX are Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.
How do you feel about Matt Smith joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX? While it’s impossible for us to guess any specifics for his role in the film, any guesses on the type of role we can expect?
