Star Wars Horror Movie Set On Hoth? Scott Derrickson Thinks It Would Work And I Disagree

Star Wars Horror

Would a Star Wars horror Movie set on Hoth work? Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson seems to think so. I have to say, I disagree, so let’s look at what this story is all about?

Scott Derrickson, director of Doctor Strange has recently announced he is no longer directing the sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So what comes next for the horror focussed director? Derrickson was asked what he would do within the Star Wars Universe on social media. The response he gave was somewhat expected and yet, not something I would want to see myself.

Check it out. The Tweet seems to have been deleted now, but here is what it said.

Just asked what kind of Star Wars movie I would make. I answered that I would make HOTH — an R-rated frozen planet horror film in the vein of The Thing or Lovecraft’s ‘In The Mountains of Madness’, with zero connection to any previous characters or storylines.

The idea of Derrickson doing a sci-fi based horror story in the vein of The Thing appeals to me. I don’t need that to have the Star Wars brand attached to it. To me that’s simply adding a franchise tag to encourage a bigger audience. A Star Wars horror movie would feel manufactured to me rather than natural. I personally don’t feel like the Star Wars universe should ever have R Rated content.

I would like some more adult themed Star Wars, but maintained at a PG-13 setting. In my opinion, Star Wars fans shouldn’t be prevented from watching the new movie because it’s too scary for kids. I just don’t see that as the way the Star Wars brand should be marketed. In fact, I’ll make a guess that Derrickson wanted to go too far with the horror in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It is possible that Derrickson was trying to make Doctor Strange 2 a little too scary for that PG-13 rating Marvel sticks to.

Yes, Scott Derrickson, give us a sci-fi horror movie set on a frozen world, it sounds like damn good fun. I just don’t want that to be a Star Wars horror movie featuring Wampas, who are about as scary as The Muppets. Let’s be clear, there are no plans that we know of to indulge Derrickson, the director was asked what he would do with a Star Wars movie and he answered? It is hardly surprising that his brain went immediately to the genre he works with most. An R rated Star Wars horror movie simply wouldn’t work for this fan. I say that as a movie fan not keen on the horror genre though, so that’s hardly surprising for me.

Let us know what you think of a Derrickson led Star Wars horror movie in the usual spot below? Would this work for you?
