Star Wars: J.J. Abrams On The Lack Of Threepio And Artoo In Sequel Trilogy And How This Will Change In The Rise Of Skywalker

Whenever I have discussed the sequel trilogy of Star Wars with my colleagues, most (not all) agree that the characters of Threepio and Artoo have been underused so far. These two droids, (Artoo mostly) have been the glue that held the Skywalker Saga together. Yet Threepio hasn’t had more than a few lines here and there, and Artoo has basically been a background ornament so far in the sequel trilogy.

One of the scenes I actually thought Rian Johnson nailed in The Last Jedi was Artoo and Luke on the Falcon, but I still don’t feel there has been enough of these two so far, especially together, I just miss their banter. Well, we know that Threepio at least seems to have a bigger role in The Rise of Skywalker and director J.J Abrams recently spoke with Uproxx and was asked why there haven’t been much of the famous droids so far and why Threepio has a bigger role in the next movie?

“He’s very center to this story and truly wonderful in it. Anthony (Daniels) gets to do some things…”

And whether Daniels was happy about this?

“He was. And there were times he was, you know, bemoaning having to do something… [Laughs] I was like, listen man, you wanted this! But he’s wonderful in this. I don’t think he’s ever been better.”

So why have we seen so little of Threepio and Artoo so far?

“Obviously, you do the best you can. You focus on what the story is and you respond to what your gut is telling you is working. And what the story seems to want. You know, I don’t know how strategic one can be working on something like that, thinking about how little or how much certain characters are used. Which is to say, you want to use them to serve the story. It turned out, we didn’t strategize this is the one Threepio has to be in more scenes than he’s ever been in. It just turned out that the story was best served using a character that has been underused to see a new side of him and tell the story. So it was very much a utility, but it felt inspired that you got to see a character in a whole new light.”

As for Anthony Daniels, here is what he said about his increased role this time around when speaking with Express back in November,

“I adored working on this film. I had tons of work to do and I felt so much part of it. C-3PO has a major arc. You are going to enjoy him because he’s had very little do until now, but in this one (writer) Chris Terrio has sunk himself into the ethos of Star Wars with (director) JJ Abrams. They enjoy every character including C-3PO.”

I just hope it’s not too little too late for Threepio, and I still worry that Artoo isn’t going to have much to do, but I guess we simply don’t know the answer to that, and probably won’t until December 20th.
