Star Wars: John Boyega Wanted Finn To Be A More Capable Soldier In The Rise Of Skywalker

I’ve quite enjoyed the Star Wars movies Disney has put out lately. I’ve generally liked the arcs they’ve had for the characters and the sheer amount of fun in them, but it’s hard to deny that Finn has had a bit of an issue in both movies. Despite being trained from birth to be a soldier, you wouldn’t have guessed that based on his personality and the way he sort of bumbles his way through things.

Actor John Boyega, while a huge supporter of the films, has also been a bit vocal about his disappointment regarding Finn’s arcs over the course of his two movies. Going into Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Boyega wanted more to do than just be a “comedic goofy dude who never gets stuff done,” as he said to EW.

“I definitely wanted more after Episode VIII. [Rise of Skywalker] makes Finn’s Episode VIII arc make more sense. We got to bring out a side of Finn we haven’t seen.”

I like his comments on this because it seems as though it will be making him a lot more capable all while doing so in service of the previous arcs he’s had. This all seems to drive home the idea that the movie won’t “undo” any of the stuff from previous films that fans have had issues with, but rather build off of it to hopefully create a more emotionally-impactful ending.
