Star Wars: Kelly Marie Tran On Cut Scenes And Other Challenges Filming The Rise Of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been divisive among fans just as The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi have been.  One point of contention for fans was the drastically limited screen time of Kelly Marie Tran’s character, Rose.

THR was able to sit down with Tran where she did not directly address her feelings toward her deduction of screen time, but she did reveal that there was a scene of hers cut during the final battle on Exegol.

“It was insane to be running across this platform — which I know you only see for a second in the movie — but we shot it so many times. I remember having bruises on my knees the next day because we kept running, and then we would fall onto our knees and do some more shooting stuff. I don’t think that’s in the movie….”

I am sure it would be annoying to shoot certain scenes numerous times only for them to not be used in the film, though you do have to commend Tran on her professional demeanor when addressing questions revolving around her limited role.

She also went on to comment about shooting scenes with previously shot footage of Carrie Fischer’s Leia.

“It’s one thing to sit there, look at that footage and try to react to it, but a lot of the big group scenes felt like they were puzzle pieces if that makes sense. I think there were more reshoots on those scenes, specifically, to just try and make sure all of the performances matched up since she [Carrie Fisher] wasn’t physically there.”

I can’t imagine how difficult, and delicate, of a situation that would be for all involved.  Co-writer Chris Terrio also commented that many scenes had to be cut due to recovering and adapting Fischer’s unused Leia footage.

I am glad they incorporated Leia in The Rise of Skywalker, because it wouldn’t have felt right without her, but the process of using previous footage for individuals who are no longer with us seems extremely difficult.  You can tell Tran was just as disappointed as many fans were with her cut screen time, but when many scenes were with Fischer’s footage you can see why.
