The Witcher: Netflix Explains How Popular ‘Toss A Coin’ Song Came About

If you have not seen Netflix’s  The Witcher yet, give it a shot, I know not every critic was in love with it, but this one was, and all of my friends that have seen it have thoroughly enjoyed it as well. Even if you have not caught it yet, you may have already heard people talking about the catchiest tune for a long time, “Toss a Coin” the tune sung by bard Jaskier in the show.

Below you can catch a small social media video from Netflix going into just how this earworm of a song came about. Though if you don’t have time to watch the video, I’ve grabbed the most important points here. The song was composed by Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinellii for the show, and here is what Netflix said about the process.

“Belousova and Ostinelli created half a dozen different versions of ‘Toss A Coin’, ranging in style from medieval to more modern renditions – including a rap. In the end, they decided to go with something a little more in keeping with [Lauren Hissrich]’s incredible vision for the series. To drive home what a banger ‘Toss A Coin’ is, the composers made Jaskier’s older songs extremely, well, not good. Keep an ear out for different versions of it throughout the series, especially when Geralt and Jaskier hit up a pub for an ale.”

They also talked about how actor Joey Batey, who plays Jaskier, was sick and had to record the music later and do some top lip-syncing work to pull it off.

The memes relating to this tune seem to multiply each day as more and more people become familiar with it. The Witcher subreddit is full of fans clamoring for an official release of the soundtrack to the show, something the showrunners have passed along to Netflix, as any decision would rest solely with the streaming giants themselves.

I watched the show a month or so before most of the world and to begin with I thought it was just me who couldn’t get it out of my head. But this tune has truly ascended into pop culture in such a short space of time that it cannot be hurting the promotion of the show itself, which is also pretty good in my opinion at least.
