Star Wars: New The Mandalorian Concept Art Shows How Far VFX Has Come

If you’re a Star Wars whore like me, chances are you’ve indulged in virtually every piece of reading material you can find about the creation of George Lucas’ groundbreaking space opera. In the midst of all that reading and watching of documentaries, you have likely stumbled across a whole batch of illustrations from Ralph McQuarrie, whose concept art helped Lucas convince 20th Century Fox fund the first film.

There are scenes of the streets of Mos Eisley, some early designs of C-3PO, R2-D2, and Darth Vader, as well as some great takes on the Tusken Raiders. It’s all amazing, iconic, and eyecatching. However, back then, it wasn’t quite possible to bring those images to the big screen as they appeared on the page.

As happens with filmmaking all the time, compromises had to be made. But decades have passed, and in the years since then, visual effects have come a long way, and an awful lot of what was once impossible is now possible. For reference of this fact, you need only look at some of the amazing concept art shared by the official Mandalorian Twitter account for the first episode of the Disney+ series.

While it looks like there have been some changes in terms of scenery, the overall feel and look has largely stayed the same. From the Mandalorian reaching his finger out to Baby Yoda to his riding the back of the Blurrg alongside Nick Nolte’s character. The visual feeling is almost identical to what artists Nick Gindraus, Christian Alzmann, Jama Jurabaev, Doug Chiang, and Ryan Church have all thought up.
