Star Wars Rebels Was Originally Going To Tackle Rogue One’s Plotline

Well here’s a little interesting bit of trivia. You remember Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and how it chronicled the stealing of the Death Star plans? That film was famously pitched by ILM’s John Knoll some-odd years ago. Interestingly enough, about a year ago, it was revealed that it was originally supposed to be a live-action TV show, but it looks like its origins go even deeper than that.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Star Wars Rebels producer (and all around Star Wars lore hound) Dave Filoni revealed that the plotline of Star Wars Rebels was originally going to be what Rogue One became:

“There were some really early on conversations with Rebels about it being it about them finding the Death Star plans. But as Rogue One came about and took shape, it was obvious we weren’t going do that story. I didn’t want to do that story, frankly, honestly, with Rebels because I thought I don’t want their whole existence to just serve and hand off to another part of the plot. I want it to be its own story about [series’ protagonist Ezra Bridger].”

This is pretty interesting to hear. Ultimately, I think Rogue One ended up being a solid, if not flawed, film, and I’m happy it got the expansive budget it deserved. Plus, with it being what it is, I’m happy they didn’t have to water it down for a family audience, which is what Star Wars Rebels has to do.

I’m also happy because, while I’m not a fan of Star Wars Rebels (it skews too young for me in its execution, even if its plot is cool), I know a lot of Star Wars fans who are, and it’s great that the show was able to find its own way based on how Filoni felt about the characters.

How do you feel about these comments? Do you wish Rebels had been about the Death Star plans instead of Rogue One? Let us know why or why not down below!
