Here we go again folks, Respawn’s Star Wars Mandalorian FPS game is now officially cancelled. IGN covered this story after a statement was made by EA following more staff layoffs in this industry. Whilst we had no direct confirmation other than this was a Star Wars FPS, it was rumored to be a Mandalorian playable character.
As per IGN;
‘Today, EA announced a major company shake-up that will result in roughly 670 individuals, or 5% of its workforce, losing their jobs. As a part of that same reorganization, Respawn’s Star Wars FPS in-development at Respawn is being cancelled.’
‘Following CEO Andrew Wilson’s announcement of the cuts today, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele shared a note with staff explaining in more detail what EA’s business priorities would be going forward. This includes her announcement that EA is shutting down an early development Star Wars FPS action game as a part of an ongoing focus on its own owned brands and supporting its existing games.’
“It’s always hard to walk away from a project, and this decision is not a reflection of the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion they have for the game,” Miele wrote. “Giving fans the next instalments of the iconic franchises they want is the definition of blockbuster storytelling and the right place to focus.”

The team who were working on this game will now be split across other upcoming games. These include a third Jedi game from the studio. In addition there are games based around Iron Man and Black Panther being developed. Of course this is hardly the first time a Star Wars game has been cancelled. Several games were announced over the last few years and none other than Jedi: Survivor has made it to sale. That should change this year with the release of Star Wars: Outlaws which does appear to be coming out.
No, this is just the latest of many failed Star Wars games. If Disney has dropped the ball with Star Wars on the movie side, then they have also dropped it with games. Fans love being able to play a role in this universe in games. Yet, any studio given the opportunity by Disney seems to fail.
Sadly, I think a Mandalorian based FPS would have been very successful. It’s a market Star Wars hasn’t really stepped into for a long time. Maybe one day?
