Star Wars: Rey Confirmed To Finally Get Some Jedi Training From Leia In The Rise Of Skywalker

I wouldn’t be shocking anyone by revealing that many Star Wars fans have been a little concerned with how powerful Rey is becoming in the sequel trilogy, whilst not actually receiving any training. Ok, she was trained in a few things by Luke in The Last Jedi, though his goal was to convince her to give up using the Force at the time. It does, therefore, make sense that at some point it would be nice to see Rey actually getting some training, for some fans anyway.

When the trailer was released we could see that there appeared to be a scene of Rey doing some training on the jungle planet, there was also a shot of Leia from that same planet and we all started to guess that perhaps Leia was training Rey. Well, we can put that one to bed, as Leia’s costume was on display during the press junket for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. LRM‘s own James Burns was in attendance, though in order to show you what I am talking about we have a social media post from Isa Skywalker, check it out.

The card reads,

General Leia Organa continues to lead the heroic Resistance, building back a fighting force after having suffered costly setbacks. Leia is also training Rey in the ways of the Force, for the Galaxy still has need of a Jedi.

That’s some good news again for me, though I can’t deny that I feel this should have begun as early as The Force Awakens, and some implied time between that movie and follow up The Last Jedi would have been easier to imagine Rey getting some off-screen training from a Skywalker. Of course, that’s something that had to come from J.J. Abrams as Rian Johnson was pretty much forced to start his movie with Rey already being with Luke in his isolation. The problem is that Leia has not shown a great deal of Force training herself in either of the first two movies in this trilogy, whereas Rey seems to have learned a hell of a lot already. We can’t change what’s happened so I’m glad they are at least taking some time for this in the final movie, even if it does feel a little too late.

Obviously there are limits to what they can do with Princess Leia in this movie given the tragic passing of Carrie Fisher after she finished filming The Last Jedi. Director J.J. Abrams previously spoke a while back about how they plan to use old footage of Leia to make it feel like she was really there for this movie.

“There are scenes where she’s interacting with other characters in a way that is uncanny,” Abrams told Total Film. “Hopefully, if it works, it will be an invisible thing and if you didn’t know, you would never know. But we got to tell the story with Leia that we would have told had Carrie lived. And that’s kind of incredible.”

How well this all comes together, well I guess I will find out in exactly two weeks’ time. Some fans seem determined to see this film fail at every level, I personally and absolutely hope it’s good, I just have my doubts about how they can pull this all off in one movie.
