Who watches the Watchmen? Everybody, it seems…
While some comic book fans (or in some cases, gatekeepers) may have had issues with the series at the start, HBO’s Watchmen has proven itself to be a worthy contender in premium cable. According to recent tallies from the network, Watchmen has averaged an impressive 7.1 million viewers in its premiere season through HBO’s linear channels and streaming and platforms. This makes it premium cable’s most popular series of 2019 and HBO’s most watched new series since the premiere of Big Little Lies.

Last Sunday’s episode–titled “The Religious Awe“–not only featured a much-talked-about twist, but also reached a total viewership of 1.2 million total viewers. With viewership continuing to build and word-of-mouth continuing to spread, those number should continue to rise as the series reaches its season finale on December 15th.
As a fan of both the original Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons 1986 graphic novel and Zack Snyder’s 2009 film adaptation, I proudly express my admiration for this series. Yes, I’m fully aware of Moore’s stance on superhero movies and the adaptations of his works, and while I greatly respect the creative genius that the man is, I stand by my strong support for what Damon Lindeloff has created for HBO. His series adaptation honors the excellent Moore/Gibbons masterpiece that came before it while creating its own future for that universe, post-Squid attack. The story continues to delve into political and social issues as the graphic novel did, while centering more upon racial injustices and extremist political ideologies–with a healthy dose of masked vigilantes, of course.
These latest tallies is good news for the series’ future, as fans of the series standby and hope to hear the word “renewal” from HBO HQ. This writer surely hopes that the paperwork is being drawn up as soon as possible.
