Star Wars: Rian Johnson On Why Lucasfilm Has A Hard Time With Directors

Rian Johnson has a relatively unique accomplishment under his belt. He’s one of two directors to stick out a project with Lucasfilm over the course of several films. Make no mistake about it, ever since Disney acquired Lucasfilm several years back, it’s been clear there is some sort of problem with their management, and it all seems to go back up to Kathleen Kennedy. Even as someone who loves most of the movies Disney has put out, I have to recognize that the director turnover isn’t fantastic.

Gareth Edwards was pushed out of Rogue One, Phil Lord and Chris Miller were ousted from Solo, Josh Trank was fired from an anthology film, Colin Trevorrow was let go at the developmental stage from Episode IX, and most recently, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss stepped down from their responsibilities in their own trilogy of films.

Only Johnson and Abrams have stuck through their own movies and seem poised to continue their relationship with Lucasfilm. So, what’s the deal? Why is Lucasfilm having so much trouble with this?

“I can’t speak to the experience that anyone else has had,” Johnson told Variety when the outlet asked about this disturbing trend. “I would caution that other people’s sets are like other people’s marriages. You think you know what’s going on with them, but the only thing that’s absolutely true is that you’re wrong. I can only speak to my experience, which was an absolute dream from top to bottom, beginning to end. From Kathy [Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy] to Bob Iger to J.J. [Abrams] to all the craftsmen.”

So, from the sound of it, you can take a lot of my speculation I gave at the top of this article and throw it out the window. It’s clear there is some issue, but none of us know the ins and outs of what does on there at the studio, so we can’t really speak intelligently about what goes on behind closed doors — as much as we would love to do so.
