Oh, Star Wars. I love you, but your fans kinda suck. Yes, I know it may be a loud minority out there, but there are far too many people out there spouting racist and sexist stuff out there for us to ignore that there exists a toxic subsection of fandom. I’m talking about the people who send violence and death threats. The people who throw out personal attacks, and who all-around forget that the filmmakers who bring this stuff to us are, in fact, people.

Rian Johnson most certainly isn’t the only person to fall victim to such attacks for his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but he is one of the more high-profile ones, and he’s never really seemed incredibly fazed by it. He’s stood by his vision, defended his actors, and occasionally bitten back a bit.

But what does he think of all this now, with The Last Jedi in his rearview mirror?

“You always have to contextualize how small a part of the fandom that section is,” Johnson told Variety. “I’m not talking about people who like or dislike a particular movie. I’m talking about the people who have dedicated themselves to abusing people who are involved in the films. It’s so small, but it gets blown up. Having been in the hurricane for the last two years, I can tell you that 95% of what I get even on Twitter is lovely and thoughtful and engaged, even when people don’t like my movie. Having said that, it’s a problem that every type of fandom is dealing with. It’s almost a byproduct of this system that is the internet.”

He’s not wrong here. At the end of the day, Star Wars may be one of the bigger fandoms out there to be plagued with toxicity, but it’s by no means the only one. And, given the nature of mankind, and the fact that it’s virtually impossible for anyone to agree on anything, there are bound to be those on either side who feel passionate enough to go too far.
