Star Wars RUMOR: Could Kathleen Kennedy Be Stepping Down As Lucasfilm President This Fall?

Ever since Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit, Kathleen Kennedy has been a controversial figure in the fan community. When that first film hit, some felt it was too much of an homage to the original, and when The Last Jedi hit, many thought (and continue to think) that the film did irreparable damage to the canon. In the months since then, fans have called for Kathleen Kennedy to step down as president of Lucasfilm, but given how successful the brand has been under her watch (with the exception of Solo: A Star Wars Story) — and you can’t argue how much money it has made — will she be stepping down?

This rumor comes from a Hollywood insider newsletter, Ankler, who in the past predicted Sue Kroll stepping down as head of WB’s Worldwide Marketing and the management problems and changes at Sony. That being said, as with any rumor, you need to take this with a grain of salt.

According to Ankler, there is talk of changing of the guards at Lucasfilm. Here’s what he said:

“While Kathleen Kennedy worked wonders relaunching this property from the abyss of the Lucas prequel trilogy and turning it into a bigger than ever all-devouring cultural force, there has to be more than some thought that it’s time for new blood at the helm. The talk out there is of a September changing of the guards. We’ll see.”

So what is the reason behind this? Are fans wishes coming true, with Kennedy getting canned by Disney itself after Solo’s box office performance? It doesn’t sound like it.

“There’s also plenty of reason to believe that Kennedy herself is tiring of this. The fights, the bad press – can’t be fun after a very gilded career. The job requires constant commuting between LA and London, which also gets old. An Ankler friend points out that she elected not to stand again for the AMPAS Board of Governors, even though she had not been termed out, suggesting that someone who has been omnipresent at poohbah conclaves for forty years now may finally be looking to scale back. And really, having made the big step of relaunching Star Wars, how much more is there to look forward to from here? “

Again, first of all, this is nothing but a rumor seemingly mixed in with some speculation. Additionally, even if this is true, who’s to say that Kennedy and co. won’t change their minds about this. After all, she really did help to bring Lucasfilm to unprecedented heights, and the fanbase has never been larger.
