For some time there have been fan theories and perhaps simply desires for Anakin Skywalker to appear somehow in Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker. It kinda makes sense considering that up until this sequel trilogy, the main character the events of the Skywalker saga revolved around was Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader, his fall and his redemption at the hands of his son Luke.
There were rumors even as far back as The Force Awakens of actor Hayden Christensen being used to portray a Force Ghost version of Anakin, there was even some official art showing a half Anakin/half Vader image. But could he actually make a return as a Force Ghost in The Rise of Skywalker? According to Roger Friedman at Showbiz, he will. Here is exactly what Freidman said in an article last week, which I genuinely missed until this weekend.
“The word is he will appear as a force ghost, just as Yoda returned in The Last Jedi. Christensen is said to have filmed his scenes last year. There were rumors of Anakin’s return in September and even last April. But I’m told it’s solid, Christensen is back, and that his appearance will give a jolt to his dormant career.”
The report also goes on to say that they firmly believe Harrison Ford will also be making a cameo return for this movie, the outlet seemingly speculating that it could be a shot showing Ford, Fisher, and Hamill together, something OT fans were disappointed we didn’t get to say before Han’s death in The Force Awakens.
“There is also strong possibility we’ll see Harrison Ford as Han Solo one last time. Remember, I told you this. Knowing JJ, there’s quite possibly a final shot of Han, Luke, and Leia to make the audience burst into tears. So stand by”
Interesting for sure, I would be completely fine with Anakin appearing as a Force Ghost, in fact I kind wished it was him and not Yoda (much as I love Yoda) that appeared to Luke towards the end of The Last Jedi. Surely there is no one better to give Luke advice than his Father who has been through all this and worse previously? Saying that, Christensen isn’t that popular amongst certain Star Wars fans for his pretty wooden portrayal of Anakin in the prequels, at the same time, there are some fans who love him.

Finally the Han rumor, well this one I’d be less keen on, unless it is a flashback done with some de-aging tech. I certainly do not want to see Han as a Force Ghost because up till now that has been a skill only mastered by the most powerful Jedi. But we shall see how it shakes down if true and judge the film on its own merits.
