Star Wars Rumor: Is Denis Lawson Going To Appear As Wedge Antilles In The Rise Of Skywalker

When I’ve discussed Star Wars (a lot) with my colleague Kyle Malone on the monthly Last Call Podcast, we have both lamented that Denis Lawson hasn’t appeared, even fleetingly, as Wedge Antilles so far in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Wedge was only a minor character in the original trilogy, but a beloved character that did appear in all three movies, even having a small little character arc of his own, from green American accent pilot in Hope, to Squadron Leader British accent by Jedi.

Denis Lawson is still working, in fact, I recently sent Kyle an image of Lawson appearing on a drama series on UK Television and said “See, Lawson could totally be Wedge in Star Wars still!” and I think he agreed. Kyle would also love to see them adapt the Rogue Squadron books, yes, there’d have to be changes to the story to conform to canon changes now, but they could simply tell those stories from the perspective of post- The Rise of Skywalker, and it would be a cool Disney+ show we both felt.

Well, is there hope after all? According to a report from Rebel Force Radio on Twitter, Wedge Antilles could be in The Rise of Skywalker after all. Check it out.

I can’t speak to the validity of this information, so we may have to just wait on see with this one. It could be such a minor part, that we wouldn’t know for certain until we see the movie in December. Though if this news came from Lawson’s reps, as they claim, then maybe it will be made official eventually? Either way, I think this shows some smarts if they do bring Wedge back and a bit of a shame if they don’t.

Personally, I think Wedge should have been one of the senior Resistance Commanders under Leia in The Force Awakens and been there in The Last Jedi as well. Again, it doesn’t have to be a big part, but it would have been cool for him to be communicating with the X-Wing squadrons led by Poe, even if he was ‘too old’ to suit up himself.

If he does appear, then… “I see you Wedge, good work”. What do you think of this story, would you like to see Wedge back in The Rise of Skywalker? Leave your thoughts below.
