STAR WARS RUMOR: Rian Johnson’s Trilogy May Be Canceled

Well, here is a rumor that may have some Star Wars fans jumping for joy. I am not one of those Star Wars fans. Unlike many vocal fans out there, I thought Star Wars: The Last Jedi made some very bold storytelling decisions that I hoped would ultimately lead the franchise in a new direction — away from the Skywalkers and away from the traditional Dark Side of the Force. That being said, there is no denying that the film managed to split fandom in two.

Anyway, let’s get on with the rumor. As you may know, Star Wars is taking a bit of a hiatus. The final film in the Skywalker Saga is set to come out this year, and following that, the next movie will be coming out in 2022, followed by 2024 and 2026. The big question many fans had was: which movies would this be? If you’ll recall, both Rian Johnson and the Game of Thrones duo David Benioff and Dan Weiss were hard at work on separate trilogies. Would these dates be alternating films, or would they all be contributing to one trilogy? If so, which trilogy, and what would it mean for the other trilogy?

YouTuber John Campea recently got in touch with a couple of sources. One of them said that all three of these films would, in fact, be the Weiss and Benioff films. This source did not have any information about Johnson’s trilogy. Another of his sources corroborated that the dates slated for the Benioff and Weiss movies, but also went on to say that Johnson’s trilogy was likely getting nixed. Campea made it clear that this is a fairly new development and that previous reports citing Johnson’s trilogy getting dumped earlier were still false. The source went on to say that Johnson may actually still be consulting with Benioff and Weiss for their trilogy, though it didn’t seem like a set-in-stone fact.

Disney has yet to comment on the situation, but given their track record, I’d be surprised if they said anything.

Personally, this sounds like it could be true. Given the Star Wars burnout fans have been feeling, spacing them out to every couple of years seems to be the wise thing to do. Having them alternate between trilogies so that we’ll only be getting an answer to our questions every four years seems a bit much, and with that in mind, means that another trilogy really couldn’t be started until 2028 — nearly ten years away. Something had to go, and given Johnson’s controversial nature, I can see why they’d be more willing to go with the Benioff and Weiss films.

All this being said, I don’t think this means Johnson will never do another film. Perhaps in another eight years, he’ll still be up for it and the slate will be open to take the lead once again. And maybe fans will be a little more forgiving (probably not though).
