New Final Fantasy 7 Remake Teaser Looks Amazing

I love Final Fantasy games. If you asked me to count the amount of time spent playing them I would have to count it in months not hours. I once had a Final Fantasy VII save with nearly 200 hours on it thanks to my obsession with getting a 100% completion with it. It should come as no surprise then that I am incredibly anxious to get my hands on Final Fantasy VII Remake. Its been a while since Sony and Square Enix showed us anything new from the anticipated title, so the above teaser from Sony’s State of Play was a nice surprise.

Almost everything shown continues to look like it’s from the first mission, known as The Bombing Mission, just as past footage. This really gives credit to the idea this game will be episodic and whatever is released first will not be the entire game. We’ve heard from the game’s director, Tetsuya Nomura, in the past that they are trying hard to stay true to the original’s story and scope and that makes it a very large game. I will be okay with an episodic release unless it takes as long as StarCraft II did or each episode costs as much as a full game. I have a feeling both of those things will end up being true of this game.

The combat system WILL NOT be turned based. That has been known for some time, much to the displeasure of the original game’s fans, but makes sense when you’re trying to introduce this game to new players too. The screenshot above shows us what combat looks like in this phase of development, but the video does state this game is not finalized yet. We also know you’ll be able to take control of the different members of your party during combat. I really think this game could benefit from Kingdom Hearts III’s button mapping and control panel combat system. I can see where having that would be beneficial when using magic, summons, and Limit Breaks. The video even seems to show Cloud doing his Cross-Slash Limit Break.

The Character designs do look a little more refined than what we saw four years ago when the game was initially announced and show. Yes, its been FOUR YEARS since the announcement of this game and in that time we have gotten 11 MCU films, Four Star Wars films, and 20 Call of Duty games. Okay, that last one was an exaggeration but you get the point. I guess I’ll be okay with the wait as long as the game is good. Let’s face it, Square Enix has a lot riding on this because if it’s episodic and the first episode fails to gain traction, they’re already too deep in the hole to just cancel the rest. This game HAS to be a success.
