You know Pee-wee Herman? Of Big Adventure, Big Top, Playhouse, and “I know you are, but what am I” fame? It’s a character that somehow transcends age. In some ways, it’s a character fit for kids and adults alike, and in some ways, he’s a character that should only be viewed with adult sensibilities. Just a few years back, a new film, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday was released, but in true Netflix form, it quickly kinda faded away into obscurity in favor of newer content.

Honestly, I figured that would be the end of that. Pee-wee Herman had a good run and could still sit comfortably in the pantheon of beloved pop culture characters, right? Well, not if star Paul Reubens has his way with it.

In a new profile of the actor’s career, THR offhandedly mentions that Reubens is shopping around a script called The Pee-wee Herman Story, where Pee-wee gets sent to a mental hospital to get shock treatment for his alcoholism. It certainly sounds like some real, untread territory for the character, that’s for sure.

Then again, it almost sounds like the natural direction for the character to take. He’s always had a darker edge to him in some ways, so to see it go full dark humor could be an interesting way to go. But what do you think about this? Do you think dark is the way to go?
