Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – Anthony Daniels Says C-3P0’s Originally Had A Larger Role In The Film

Another day, another piece of information on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Today’s entry is an editorial decision involving a much-beloved character in the protocol droid known as C-3PO. One of only two characters to grace the screen in all nine of the saga films.

Actor Anthony Daniels who has become synonymous with the character recently spoke with IGN and revealed his thoughts on C-3P0’s part in the culmination of the Skywalker Saga. Check out what he had to say below.

“I just was so thrilled that J.J. [Abrams, writer-director] and [co-writer Chris Terrio] finally came up with something worthwhile, and including that crazy thing, ‘I am not permitted to translate a Sith artifact. What a wonderful reversal.”

Daniels continued, speaking about C-3PO’s screentime being cut down.

“You also have to realize that there’s an awfully lot of editing after you’ve finished filming, so C-3PO’s role was even sweeter and broader than that. But some of those niceties have to go because there’s so much in that film already, it’s almost two films in one, as you know. So I was a little sad about that, particularly his relationship with Poe, played by the wonderful Oscar Isaac. That was just so sweet and so funny, because Poe was always kind of irritated by C-3PO, but in a nice way. And working with Oscar, I just would giggle through scenes with him because he’s just so sweet and natural.”

While he can border on the edge of annoying at times, C-3P0 is as much a part of Star Wars as any of the other characters. And I am glad he was given a sort of spotlight in the final film. However, I am not a fan of said spotlight, as I don’t see why he couldn’t have led Rey, Finn, and Poe to their destination without translating the inscription on the dagger. I mean, he had the knowledge of where it was, right? Am I missing something?
