Star Wars: What’s The Difference Between The Original Trilogy And Sequel Trilogy? [VIDEO]

Star Wars has changed a lot over the decades. Some may say for the better. Some may say for the worse. But, regardless of how you feel about the changes, I think we can all agree, there are some core differences in the types of stories being told, the types of characters being portrayed, and the overall message being disseminated to the viewers. But what are some of these differences? In a recent Vanity Fair video, writer Lev Grossman (who wrote the recent cover story about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) breaks down some of these differences.

For starters, Grossman points to the fairy tale nature of the original trilogy. Yes, it went to some dark places, but when all said and done, the good prevailed, and that was that. The new trilogy has a bit more nuance to it than what came before, and this is a result of how different the worlds were when the respective films came out.

Another big difference has to do with the overall goal of the characters in the trilogy. The original sees our heroes almost trying to restore a former glory of sorts where peace reigned for 1,000 years, but in the new trilogy, they are more focused on moving forward and building something that lasts.

Grossman goes on to compare Luke and Rey in solid detail, starting with the difference in their lives and motivations. Another comparison made is between Obi-Wan and old Luke Skywalker and how differently they handle their similar situations. Then Kylo Ren and Darth Vader are compared…honestly, if you want to see it, check out the video above. I can continue spouting them off here, but it’s much more entertaining to watch, and at the end of the day, these aren’t my ideas, so I’d just be parroting them.
