Star Wars: Why There Was No Concern Releasing Mandalorian Close To The Rise Of Skywalker

This past month or so since Disney+ has been released has been all Star Wars. You only need to stumble on 87 Baby Yoda memes to see how it’s taken over the entire world. It’s also definitely no coincidence that The Mandalorian released so close to the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker…but was it ever a concern?

There’s been some issues surrounding the franchise as of late, with some fans not really feeling the excitement for each new movie. Many would chalk that up to decreasing quality of films (I wouldn’t), and some may simply be getting weary of the space setting. So, what made them decide to release The Mandalorian so close to The Rise of Skywalker?

“I don’t think there was a worry about that,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told io9 in a recent interview. “And I think we’ve been pleasantly surprised. We’re going into television. We’ve never done [live-action] television for Star Wars. So, yes, there’s an unknown and I suppose you could say there was an underlying risk. But what we absolutely knew is that the two are very different in look and feel and were not in any way trying to do the same thing. So we arrived at a point of view pretty early that we thought the two could live comfortably side by side. And I actually think the fans are having fun with Mandalorian and I think it will only help The Rise of Skywalker.”

I have to agree with Kennedy here. While I haven’t been the BIGGEST fan of The Mandalorian, I respect the fact that it feels more like a Spaghetti Western than a Star Wars show. Being able to create movie and shows that feel more diverse in style and feel, I think, is key to avoiding audience burnout — see Marvel Studios for how to do it correctly.

With The Mandalorian, we are getting exactly what I’d hoped. Something set in space with some Star Wars-esque connections with their own style and feel.

So, do you agree that releasing this show so close to the final movie in the Skywalker Saga is a non-issue? Let us know your thoughts down below!
