Steven Chase wrote and directed the comedy Stan The Man. This heartwarming film about redemption and second chances presents a morality story. We can all relate to screwing up, and Stan The Man is a great example of a movie that makes you reflect on the human experience. Check out the synopsis and the interview conducted just one day before the film’s release with director and star of down below.
“Stan Mann (Steven Chase), a new money multi-millionaire, whose life consists of ladies, gambling and booze, lives at a 5-star hotel where the staff tends to his every need. Known as “Stan the Man” for his extreme generosity, he gets mixed up in a casino gambling scheme with Russian Mobsters and in one fateful bet, Stan loses everything. Planning to drown his sorrows in a bottle, Stan is critically wounded in a liquor store robbery, where he takes the bullet intended for the store clerk, Kristi (Anne Leighton). During a near-death experience in the ER, a slightly resentful Angel gives Stan 30 days to change his ways and redeem himself, and find his one true love.”
Stan the Man is out now on all platforms!
LRM: How’s everything going for you today?
Steven: Everything is good. I’m resting a little bit. We had the premiere last night at the rally studio, so I’m a little tired.
LRM: Okay. Congratulations.
Steven: Thank you. Yeah.
LRM: All right. Well, we won’t make the interview too long. I know that had to be a lot. I mean, that’s awesome though to have a premiere.
Steven: Yeah. Yeah. It was really good. Yeah. You got to get in there early in the morning because it’s a couple hours from my house, it’s in Temecula, having to travel to L.A., so that takes a little bit of time. You hit traffic and then before you know it, the day’s over it’s the nighttime.
LRM: Right. That sounds like a lot of exhilaration.
Steven: Yeah. Yeah. Exactly.
LRM: Where are you at?
Steven: I’m in Temecula, California. Where they make the wine over here. They got the vineyards.
LRM: Oh really? Nice. Great place to be man.
Steven: It’ll put you to sleep.
LRM: I’m sure. Yes. Great way to relax, right?
Steven: Yeah, definitely.
LRM: Well on behalf of the website over here LRM Online, I want to thank you for taking time out to do the interview today. And if you’re all set, I’d like to go ahead and jump into some questions.
Steven: Yeah. I’m ready. Thank you.
LRM: Awesome. Now you both starred in and directed this project, is that correct?
Steven: That is correct.
LRM: How did you manage that?
Steven: Well, I came up with the idea. I was coming off another movie and we had about a couple of days wrapped into that, about a week’s worth of work. And I over time woke up one day and said there’s a move to do some kind of like a romantic comedy type of movie. In the realm of Awesome or something like that.
So I just started writing notes down. And then I said to myself who better to do this, to direct it is myself? I know what I want to do. I know where I should take the character. I love working with actors and collaborating. And it’s just a great position to be in. So I figured that’s the route I’m going to go.
So I created this story and we did the screenplay. The first draft just didn’t work out. Then we started again. I started working with Robin and we started making some headway. And then I got a location manager on board to see where I can figure out at the same time some type of location and I could have the scene so I can know what’s what. And that’s how it happened. So I got everything going at one time, writing, location scouting.
LRM: Wow.
Steven: Yeah. And actually scouting actors as well. All at the same time.
LRM: It sounds like you we’re wearing many hats there.
Steven: Yeah.
LRM: That’s amazing.
Steven: Yeah. You have to when you’re doing an indie. And nobody else is going to do it for you. I think once God puts a manifestation in you, you can’t stop.
LRM: Right. That’s a good way to put it. Yeah.
Steven: Yeah.
LRM: It’s going to happen.
Steven: The passion. You just can’t. But I tell you I’m a little tired.
LRM: Yeah.
Steven: Because I made a few more movies afterwards and I directed another movie. But at this point I’m know I’m a little tired.
LRM: I hear you. That’s amazing work, man.
Steven: I have a lot of respect for these directors like Clint Eastwood, Stallone. I mean, they just keep going, right?
LRM: Yeah. Those guys. Yeah. Especially Eastwood. I mean, goodness. He’s a great filmmaker.
Steven: Yeah. It seems that age doesn’t matter to them. They just keep going on and on and on. It doesn’t matter.
LRM: My heart is pumping. I’m pumping. Or something like that.
Steven: Yeah. I have a lot of respect for that. I really do.
LRM: Definitely.
Steven: I know what it takes. I really know what it takes.
LRM: Yeah. That’s a lot. You’ve been hands-on with it. That’s amazing. Now, let me ask you about your role in Stan The Man. For the readers that may not be familiar with it, which we want to bring them awareness through the interview, what can you tell me about your role in Stan The Man as a character?
Steven: Yeah, he’s a new money millionaire type of fellow. He did it on his own. And the only problem with him is that you’re not living, the right life. You not on the right track. He’s off of it. And he’s not a bad guy, but he doesn’t realize that he’s just not on the right track on. He’s drinking, he’s womanizing, he’s a gambler. And his mom who passed away is trying to get his attention, but he just didn’t pick up on this thing though. So he had to learn the hard way. And so in other ways, it’s very warm and touching and heartfelt and it’s about second chances. About finding love.
LRM: That’s a great way to sum that up there.
Steven: Thank you.
LRM: Now let me ask you now, what is the process from script to screen when you’re actually the person wearing the most hats from the script, to the acting, to the casting, to the location scouting to the directing. What’s that process like?
Steven: That’s a lot.
LRM: But I’m sure there’s a method to the madness.
Steven: It’s almost like getting a root canal, I think. Yeah it’s painful, but it feels good at the end. There’s so many moving parts. I’m not the first person to become a feature film director or actor, writer. I mean there’s so many out there and we all go through the same thing. We start out with a plan and then the plan goes out the window. That’s what happened.
LRM: That’s what happened?
Steven: Yeah, and then you just got to pray to God that you can make it happen. That you can deliver. Because you’re responsible for the actors you’ve chosen. You’re responsible for your DP. You’re responsible for everything that happens. You can’t blame anybody because you’re the director. You’re the one that gave the green light that this is the script and this is what’s going to be on the screen.
So, it sums up that the process is not for everybody, but it’s not impossible. If you have a dream of wanting to be a successful screenwriter, actor or director these are the things you have to do. You got to take chances. You’ve got to roll the dice.
LRM: That’s great advice there and a great insight into the process overview.
Steven: Thank you.
LRM: Now for our readers here at LRM, when and where can they go watch Stan the Man?
Steven: Oh, Stan The Man is going to be on all platforms coming tomorrow. I believe that it’s on the video on demand starting tomorrow and then trickling down to all of them. I don’t know which one’s getting it first and then it’ll be on DVD as well. And it starts February 4th.
LRM: February 4th?
Steven: February 4th.
LRM: What else do you have on the horizon?
Steven: I have another movie that I directed that coming out. It’s a mafia saga called Frankie’s Redemption. So I wrote and also acted and directed this one as well. And that should be out in a couple of months with the same distribution, Avail Films.
And I’m also getting ready to direct and star in a movie called Too Hot To Trot about a horse that talks. These two low-level wise guys get to a big mob guy and they need to try to figure out their way out of the trouble so they stumble onto a talking horse that can take a take to the track, talk to the horse and they’ll tell them the winners of the horses.
LRM: Oh man. We got to check those out for sure. When are those going to be available? When can we-
Steven: Well, we’re going to start shooting Too Hot to Trot in about four weeks.
LRM: Okay.
Steven: Go do location scouting. We’re getting very close to starting and Frankie’s is completed, so it’ll be out soon. Frankie’s Redemption.
LRM: Okay Great. Yeah, well definitely keep us abreast of the projects.
Steven: Thank you. Thank you very much.
LRM: Yeah.
Steven: Appreciate it.
LRM: Definitely, man. Well, Steven, thank you for taking the time out today for the interview.
Steven: Thank you. Thank you LRM. I appreciate it, man. God bless. Stay well.
LRM: God bless you as well, man. You have a great one.
Steven: Thank you.
LRM: Congratulations again.
Steven: Thank you. Thank you very much.
LRM: You’re welcome. Have a good day.
