In an era of $300 million blockbuster film budgets, the idea that a quality feature film could be shot with just the smartphone in your pocket seems completely absurd. Yet, that’s precisely what legendary filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has done with his latest project, Unsane, starring Clarie Foy — filmed completely on his iPhone. No, really!
Were this any other creator the notion of a smartphone movie reaching theatrical release would seem like a marketing stunt. However, Soderbergh, who’s known for technical innovation and bold narrative experiments, such as casting MMA fighter Gina Carano in the minimalist action-thriller Haywire or making an anthology Western series for Netflix — he’s even threatened to retire from the industry.

According to Deadline, Unsane is the story of a young woman (Foy) who’s committed to a mental institution and forced to face her greatest fears — but are these fears real or only imagined? The film also stars Joshua Leonard, SNL’s Jay Pharaoh, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins, and Amy Irving. Written by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, co-produced by Bleecker Street — who also partnered with Soderbergh on Logan Lucky earlier this year. Similar to Logan Lucky, Soderbergh is self-distributing Unsane.
For every film student and wannabe out that who laments the high cost of breaking into the movie industry, here’s your chance to study a master who’s achieving Hollywood results with just the device in his pocket — that sounds a bit odder than I intended, but you get the idea.
The promise of making a short or feature film on an iPhone or Android, and then publishing it to Vimeo or YouTube is entirely possible — it’s how many folks are making their own luck and finding their way into the professional ranks. Hopefully, more filmmakers like Soderbergh continue to innovate and take risks, they’re paving the way for future creators.
