According to reports Steven Yeun is out as Sentry in Thunderbolts. The news comes from TheWrap, who says that their sources have informed them the role of Sentry is being recast. Thunderbolts was supposed to film last year, and will now commence sometime in 2024. Though the outlet states no reasons for the recast. However I assume, (perhaps wrongly) that this is a scheduling issue due to the delays.

Here is what TheWrap had to say about the situation.

‘Steven Yeun will not be joining the cast of Marvel Studios’ upcoming film “Thunderbolts,” which will focus on a team of antiheroes, according to insiders with knowledge.’

‘Earlier last year, Yeun had been in talks to join the film, however Marvel Studios never officially confirmed his casting on the project.’

This is true, Yeun was never officially confirmed or appeared officially. However, we also know he did plenty of costume tests as Sentry. Many insiders have seen artwork of Yeun as Sentry also. I guess what I am saying is that I think he was in fact cast in the role. Whether one party or the other has had a change of mind, or Yeun’s schedule left him unable to fulfil the role, we don’t know?

As for who could be recast in the role I have genuinely no clue? Yeun being from Asian racial heritage I think is inconsequential to Sentry. I assume they just fancied Yeun for the role. Ergo, the casting net could maybe be cast very wide. One thing is for sure, Marvel will have to get a move on. I therefore expect they either have someone lined up, or are close.

At the same time, remember we are not supposed to know Sentry is even in this movie yet. Therefore, don’t expect a cast announcement for this role when it is filled. Instead, we’ll be looking at the rumor mill and the trades for news. However, a recast seems certain based on what we know. Sentry is far too important to the story of Thunderbolts for the character to be cut as far as we understand.
