Still Hoping James Gunn Will Be Rehired? Get Ready To Be Disappointed

This has undoubtedly been the biggest story of the year so far, James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies was sacked by Disney. Gunn’s dismissal was as I am sure you all know, due to a series of old social media posts which were deemed to be out of sync with Disney’s family brand image.

Since Disney announced the sacking of Gunn there has been a huge upsurge of positive support from both fans and people in the industry including the cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. For a while, there seemed to be a feeling that Disney might take a step back and decide to reverse their decision and give Gunn a second chance. However, according to Variety‘s sources that chance is now dead in the water.

The outlet is reporting their sources tell them Gunn did meet with studio chairman Alan Horn out of courtesy. However, this was a courtesy that did not extend any further. Apparently, Horn/Disney has decided to stand by their decision to sack James Gunn. Gunn met Horn along with his UTA rep and the meeting is reported to have been very civil and professional but ultimately did not affect that decision of the studio giant.

It is also reported that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige did not attend this meeting because he was out of town on other business, but that Feige stands by Disney’s decision 100%. It now seems as though the next step when Feige returns is to start the search for a new director to helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The report does say that Disney is intended to use Gunn’s completed Guardians 3 script, though the sources do say that a new director may just want to polish that script a little by themselves before filming which is still set for 2019.

It’s for sure that there are going to a be a lot of unhappy Marvel fans out there today and who knows how this will all play out with the cast being so open in their support of Gunn? Either way it seems like we can put this one to bed, Gunn isn’t coming back to direct another Marvel film and who knows who will take over the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. There is also the possibility that no matter who takes over, this decision could hurt sales of the movie when it does finally release.

Let us know what you think of all this in the usual place below.
