The Stranger Things final Season is to be rated for adults only, as per Netflix themselves, which shows TV-MA for the flagship show. The previous four seasons of Stranger Things on Netflix have been rated TV-14. A rating which was suitably stretched in some of those seasons. Whether by design or simply consequence it seems Season 5, which we knew would get dark hasn’t made the cut for TV-14. Now unlike cinema releases it is highly unlikely this rating will affect viewership.
Stranger Things 5 will get enough hype when it releases. Therefore, no one is going to miss it releasing if they subscribe to Netflix or not. However, there may be some teen users who have watched all previous seasons that may be searching for it. They likely won’t even see ST5 appear on their feed due to parental restrictions. I guess a lot of kids will be watching it on mum or dad’s account.

In my household I think the one most excited to watch Stranger Things 5 is my 10 year old daughter. She is a massive fan and only discovered the series this past year and binge watched them all with my wife. I had already seen them all at release. I hope therefore they do reveal some details of what has caused this higher rating before release. I’d like to know about any sexually explicit scenes we need to skip for her. I am however expecting the deaths of key characters in this final season. It’s possible it could just be that which pushes the rating this time?
Either way Netflix knows it doesn’t really matter. If fans have watched ST1-4 they will be watching the final season no matter what.
