Street Fighter II Series In Development

HADOUKEN!

It has finally come time for the Street Fighter II franchise to redeem itself. After just an awful movie in the mid-90s, a television series based on the popular fighting game is in the works. The series will be based on the World Warrior storyline and is said to focus on four of the characters from the game. Ken and Ryu (of course), Chun-Li, and the military man Guile. They will join forces in an attempt to defeat the game’s final boss, M. Bison.

Entertainment One’s Mark Gordon will produce the series, here is what Gordon had to say about he project:

Street Fighter is a global tour de force franchise, having garnered immense worldwide commercial success and built a vast devoted fanbase that has only grown through its 30 year legacy. We are thrilled to be teaming up with Joey, Jacqueline and Mark, who are already so deeply connected to this brand, to bring this adored story to television audiences everywhere. A particular strength of Street Fighter is the wide range of ethnically diverse characters and powerful women featured in the game. It will allow us to build an inclusive and engaging TV universe.”

The team that brought us 2014’s Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist will also be involved in the project.

Capcom executive producer of Street Fighter, Yoshinori Ono:

“After a long search, guided by the team behind Assassin’s Fist, we are delighted to be partnering with a company with the outstanding TV experience of Mark Gordon and eOne. They have the credentials to help us launch a faithful adaptation of Street Fighter as a major TV series.”

We wouldn’t have Mortal Kombat or really any fighting game if it wasn’t for Street Fighter II. And like Mortal KombatStreet Fighter II, is in desperate need of a proper film adaptation. The film from the 90s just didn’t do the franchise justice, like the many other video game to screen projects, it simply didn’t have the same feel, or capture the spirit of the game.
