The collaboration that we didn’t know we wanted or needed. Legendary Japanese animation Studio Ghibli announced today on Twitter that they are working on a mystery project with Lucasfilm.
The announcement came via a clip that opened with the Lucasfilm logo followed by the Studio Ghibli logo. The clip was also re-tweeted by the Star Wars Twitter account. For the moment those are all the details that were provided about whatever the project may be.
Despite the fact that it was shared by the Star Wars social media account, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a Star Wars project that they are working on. Lucasfilm also has the Indiana Jones franchise as well as the Willow franchise. But it wouldn’t be a surprise if they are collaborating on an episode of Star Wars: Visions.

For over thirty years Studio Ghibli has made phenomenal critically-acclaimed animation films. They have been led by the legendary directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. Some of our favorites at home are Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Porco Rosso.
Star Wars: Visions is an anthology series that feature non-cannon stories from our favorite galaxy far, far, away. In the first season, we were treated to a variety of Japanese anime studios. They showcase their perspective on a variety of Star Wars concepts like the Force, Jedi, and of course the Empire. The first season was received well by audiences on Disney+ which is why we are getting a second season.
While we wait for more information about this partnership, you can always revisit the first season of Star Wars: Visions on Disney+. As well as the Studio Ghibli films on HBO Max.
