With the turn of the year fast approaching, the 2023 Emmys are on the horizon, leading to many making their predictions about the various categories that are up for awards.
The Outstanding Drama Series category is always highly anticipated, as it can provide people with shows to watch or re-visit if they have already seen them. The award basically symbolizes the impact that they have had on TV and their popularity among the viewing audience.
Succession has been a huge hit over the last few years, having been crowned the winner for this particular accolade on no fewer than two occasions already. It will be going for its third one at the 75th annual ceremony, with The Last of Us, The White Lotus, Better Call Saul, and others looking to try to stop it from doing so. But will they have enough to be able to stop its dominance at the awards night?
Why Succession’s reign will likely continue
Succession might have come to an end in terms of its run as a drama, but viewers have been in agreement about how good the final season was. Many critics heaped praise upon the finale of the show once it was screened, with some even citing it as the best feel-bad ending to have ever been created.
While there are no spoilers in this article for those who have yet to see it, the continued struggle that Logan Roy and his adult children were experiencing for his media empire had come to an end in a rather dramatic and emotional conclusion. Season four is the final season of the show, so viewers who have not seen it will want to make sure that they do not miss out.
Given that it was the final season, there is an argument that the number of votes that could be cast for Succession could be multiplied, too. This is because voters may want the show to be recognized further with another award and make it receive three over its duration and making it win each time it has been eligible.
The bookies appear to be backing it to do well, too, with those who bet online with Unibet UK already able to find odds on the show’s likelihood of winning the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. It has been provided with a price of 1/10, thus making it an overwhelming favorite. The Last of Us is the next best bet but is priced as high as 7/1, with The White Lotus at 12/1 and Better Call Saul at 20/1.
This may be down to the fact that the show had managed to receive a whopping 27 nominations across the board this year, although The Last of Us and The White Lotus received 24 and 23, respectively. Ted Lasso was the only other show to have received more than 20 (21).
Of course, viewers will have to tune in to the 75th Emmys award ceremony if they are to find out if the show is able to go out in style and in the way that so many expect it to do so.
Everything you need to know about the 2023 Emmys
The 2023 Emmys will be taking place on a different date this year after the scheduled initial date had to be postponed. It will now take place on January 15, 2024, at 17:00 PT. It was originally scheduled to take place on September 18, 2023, but with the strikes of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, it had to be pushed back.
This year’s award ceremony will be held in downtown Los Angeles, taking place at the Peacock Theater at LA Live. Actor and comedian Anthony Anderson will be tasked with hosting this year’s event.
The Emmys can often be a little confusing for those who are casual viewers of the ceremony, as there can be some strange rules in place regarding eligibility. In its simplest understanding, shows this year are eligible if they were screened between 1 June 2022 and 31 May 2023. If they were before or after this period, they are not eligible. Some have noted the confusion with the example of the show The Bear. Its first season was critically acclaimed and is able to compete for a gong, but its second season – which has already been aired – will not be eligible.
